How To Measure

Add new

  1. If possible, remove the existing register or grille.

  2. Measure the actual opening of the duct-work in the wall, ceiling, or floor. Please always express the width measurement before the height.

  3. If the rough opening measures 20 inches wide by 14 inches tall, the correct size piece to order would be a 20x14.

  4. The actual register or grille's interior dimension will be slightly (3/8 inch) smaller, so the piece's frame and damper assembly will fit into the recessed opening.

  5. The actual register or grille's face size including flange will be larger than the duct opening. This will ensure the flange will fit flush on the finished surface and completely cover the rough opening. The outer flange will house the various screw holes to securely attach the piece, if applicable.

  6. SteelCrest manufactures products to fit any size openings. You tell us the rough opening size and we will size the piece accordingly.

  7. If the existing register or grille can't be removed, measure the outside of the existing product's face and ask for assistance.

  8. Before installing your register or grille, we highly recommend painting the interior of the rough opening flat black to help conceal the ugly ductwork or opening.

  9. In addition to painting the interior, we also recommend installing a concealment louver on the back of all returns. These can be purchased separately but will come attached when ordered together.
